Graduate students from the Department of Political Science at University of Ghana undertook an academic visit to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to gain practical insight into public sector compensation management.
The visit, led by Dr Akpeko Agbevade, a Senior Lecturer in the Department, was designed to expose students to the Commission’s operational dynamics and deepen their understanding of compensation systems within Ghana’s public sector.
During the engagement, students were introduced to the work of four key technical directorates of the Commission: Salary Administration; Grievance and Negotiations; Research, Monitoring and Evaluation; and Productivity and Performance-Based Rewards. The sessions provided first-hand insights into the Commission’s mandate, processes, and its role in promoting fairness, equity, and productivity in public sector remuneration. Students were also briefed on the Commission’s ongoing transition to an Independent Emoluments Commission (IEC).
Dr Agbevade expressed appreciation for the opportunity, noting that such engagements significantly enhance students’ academic and professional development. He emphasized that practical exposure is essential in bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application, particularly in the area of public sector compensation management.
This study tour marks the fourth visit by students of the Department to the Commission in the past three years, reflecting a sustained commitment to equipping postgraduate students with relevant industry experience.
